Smile Makeovers in Columbus, Ohio

Do you wish you had the smile of your dreams? You’re not alone. According to an American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry survey, 92 percent of Americans believe an attractive smile is an important asset; yet only one out of two people are satisfied with their smile.

Even if you liked your smile as a teenager or young adult, chances are you can benefit from cosmetic dentistry, such as porcelain veneers by Columbus, Ohio dentist, Dr. Sharon Schindler. As we age, teeth tend to darken. Enamel thins to reveal naturally yellow dentin, and food, coffee, tea, wine, and smoking can all cause stains.

Let us help you become more confident with cosmetic dentistry.

Would I be a good candidate for a smile makeover?

No one has a perfect natural smile. There isn’t a threshold to qualify for a smile makeover with Dr. Schindler; it depends on your goals. One requirement is that your basic oral health is good. Our smile makeovers involve various cosmetic fixes to your smile. Serious oral health problems such as tooth decay, missing the majority or all your teeth, and gum disease have to be dealt with before any smile makeover procedures can begin. This isn’t a deal breaker; Dr. Schindler simply must take care of these issues before she can move on to the cosmetic improvements.

What issues do smile makeovers target?

During your consultation for a smile makeover, Dr. Schindler first wants to know what you like and hate about your smile. Do you have stains from a reaction to tetracycline as a kid? Are your teeth shorter than proportional, creating a gummy smile. Are there gaps between teeth? Are your teeth uneven? Once she knows the areas you’d like to address, she’ll consider how each of these aspects of your smile are affected.

These are the areas she’ll consider:

  • Tooth colorTeeth whitening is usually a part of just about every smile makeover. This is done first, so that we can match later procedures such as dental bonding or porcelain veneers to your whiter, natural tooth color. If your teeth are stained on the interior of the tooth, the dentin, due to either tooth trauma or from a drug reaction, Dr. Schindler will cover the staining with veneers.
  • Alignment and spacing — While serious alignment problems leading to a bad bite may require orthodontics, a smile makeover usually addresses issues such as misshapen teeth, gaps between teeth, and crooked teeth. You’ll be amazed at how we can change these problems with porcelain crowns and porcelain veneers.
  • Missing teeth — While not truly “cosmetic” in nature, replacing missing teeth is a must in a smile makeover. For replacing a single tooth or two, Dr. Schindler prefers dental implants. For more teeth, a porcelain bridge could be the best answer, even a partial denture.
  • Balance — Your teeth should be proportional to the rest of your face. That’s one reason gummy smiles can be very distracting when talking with another person. Dr. Schindler uses our diode laser to remove extra gum tissue. This effectively lengthens the tooth size. Uneven, chipped, and cracked teeth can be cosmetically bonded or covered with veneers to cover the flaws.

What procedures are involved in a smile makeover?

Dr. Schindler customizes every smile makeover to the needs of the patient, but these are the usual procedures involved:

  • Teeth whitening — Using our hydrogen peroxide whitening gels, we return your teeth to their natural color, removing stains from coffee, red wine, and the passage of time.
  • Porcelain veneers — These thin wafers of porcelain are applied to the fronts of the teeth to give your teeth perfect symmetry and a bright white sheen.
  • Tooth-colored fillings — Old silver amalgam fillings are replaced with new tooth-colored fillings that are made of composite resin and are invisible once in place.
  • Gum contouring — Using a diode soft-tissue laser, Dr. Schindler removes excess gum tissue, making your teeth appear longer and more in proportion. The laser not only removes the unwanted tissue, but it also seals the cut to prevent bleeding and vastly lowers the chances of infection. It also makes the procedure virtually painless afterwards.
  • Porcelain crowns — Badly damaged teeth may not have the underlying strength to be cosmetically improved, so we use a porcelain crown to overlay the entire tooth all the way down to the gumline. Crowns return full strength to a tooth and can be used to change to overall shape of the tooth.
  • Dental bonding — For small chips or subtle changes in one or more teeth, Dr. Schindler may use dental bonding. This uses composite resin that is painted on in thin layers and then cured to cover imperfections or change the shape of a tooth.
  • Dental implants — Dental implants are Dr. Schindler’s preferred option for replacing a missing tooth. Implants feature a titanium implant that is screwed down into the jawbone. The jawbone then grows around the implant, fully incorporating it. A post is attached to the implant with a porcelain false tooth atop that. Implants function exactly like a natural tooth.

What are the benefits of a smile makeover?

Personal confidence is hard to quantify, but easy to love. If you’ve had a smile that was less than perfect — maybe your teeth were stained by tetracycline, maybe you had a tooth that was misshapen, maybe you had a gummy smile — the odds are you avoided smiling when in groups of people. When you don’t like the look of your smile, covering it up is something you do, even subconsciously.

Contrast that with a dazzling white smile of perfectly aligned teeth. Now, the last thing you’re going to do is hide that smile from the public. Having a beautiful smile thanks to a smile makeover from Dr. Schindler can give you a boost in confidence that you didn’t even know you were lacking.

If you’ve been missing a tooth, you may have been avoiding eating certain foods that could impact the gap. Plus, missing teeth can allow the teeth on each side to slide over and ruin your overall alignment. Missing teeth can even create whistling sounds when talking. Now, after Dr. Schindler has replaced that missing tooth with an implant, you’re whole again. Eat what you like. Smile freely.

Bottom line, having a beautiful smile can impact you at work, at home, and just in the way you see yourself.

Will the results I achieve with my smile makeover be permanent?

< class=" et_pb_text_align_">

Most of these treatments have a shelf life, so to speak. For instance, teeth whitening brightens your teeth many shades, but they’ll stain again with the red wine and raspberries we all like. Porcelain veneers last from 10-15 years, and then you’ll need a new set. If Dr. Schindler includes clear aligners for tooth movement in your smile makeover, that alignment of your teeth is permanent. The same is true with dental implants for replacing a missing tooth or two. Implants usually last the remainder of the patient’s life. Crowns can last anywhere from 10 to 25 years with good oral hygiene. Gum contouring is permanent.

Bottom line — your smile will be dazzling, but parts of it will need future touch-ups, such as teeth whitening, while other parts are for the long haul.
