Social media is full of entertaining videos after young adults have their wisdom teeth removed and are still under the influence of their sedation. However, what requires one to have their wisdom teeth removed? Why is it okay to remove these teeth but not other ones? Learn more about wisdom teeth and why they should be removed by reading on!

What are the wisdom teeth?

Contrary to their name, wisdom teeth do not make you wiser! Instead, they tend to create complications within the smile because of their position and their late eruption through the gum line. The wisdom teeth are the third molars that tend to become present around the late teen or early adult years. While these teeth were necessary for our ancestors who needed to chew roots, leaves, meat, and other tough foods, they are no longer needed for us in today’s world. Additionally, wisdom teeth may become impacted or problematic for patients, requiring them to have them permanently extracted.

When to remove wisdom teeth

There are many reasons why a patient may be advised to have one or more wisdom teeth removed. Wisdom teeth may be:

  • Too far in the mouth for proper brushing and flossing, contributing to one’s risk of periodontal disease or tooth decay
  • Impacted underneath the gum line, stuck and unable to erupt through
  • Contributing to chronic bad breath due to the difficulty of reaching and cleaning them
  • Interfering with current orthodontic work, requiring surgical removal to keep them from disrupting alignment of the dental arch
  • Painful due to impaction, decay, or disease that has affected the wisdom tooth
  • Removed at the recommendation of our dentist, Dr. Sharon Schindler
