In the Gahanna office of Jackie Brerkowitz, red and blue neon signs announce "orthodontics" but spell "excitement" and "pizazz" for his many adolescent patients who enjoy his video-game room.
And Fixari Family Dental stocks its bathrooms with diapers and toiletries.
The nature of the business allows dentist to furnish their practices elaborately.
Most operate as small business owners who make decisions without bureaucratic approval.
"We run our own business," Berkowitz said.
Fixari credits an influx of female dentists for helping to revolutionize the profession.
"Early on, it took only a few amenities to stand out," he said. "Now, more and more dentists are jumping on this band wagon."
Homelike environments and pampering services benefit the employees, too.
The profession historically has had high rates of depression, burnout and substance abuse, Fixari noted. The amenities "make my job more fun," he said.
Berkowitz eagerly anticipates seeing smiles on the faces of his patients.
"It feels like I am going to a party every day," he said.
Sometimes, the scene at Schindler Dentistry is a party: The Schindlers stock champagne to celebrate with patients who have successful outcomes.
"And sometimes," Mr. Schindler said, "we take them out to dinner."
