Patients are responsible for the bill, as cosmetic procedures typically are not covered by insurance.
Smile makeovers build self-esteem, and that affects professional and social relationships, experts say. The academy's survey reveals 74 percent of adult Americans believe an unattractive smile can hurt a person's chance for career success, while 92 percent say an attractive smile is an important social asset.
People note an attractive smile, but usually don't know why it's appealing. "It's the symmetry and proportion of the height and width of the teeth, along with the gum line," Davis says.
"It makes a big difference when someone doesn't have to hide their smile. They can freely laugh, smile and talk," Schindler says.
"I would suggest this to anybody. The before and after photos are unbelievable and I'm amazed at the compliments I get. I have more confidence to deal with people on a professional level," says Babbert.
Oral health also improves, because people are more conscientious about maintaining their teeth, he says.
