* Contact your caring Cosmetic Dental office. Bad breath should definitely be evaluated by a professional.

Part 1-Possible Causes of Halitosis or Bad Breath

Here at the office of Ohio Cosmetic Dentist, Dr. Sharon Schindler, we hear it time and time again. An ongoing concern of patients young and old, from varying walks of life is this: “Doctor, how can I get rid of my bad breath?” If this unpleasant situation is affecting you or someone close to you, we want you to know that there is most likely a solution!

In part one of our blog series on bad breath (known in the dental field as halitosis) we will look at some possible causes of this condition. Here is a list of probable origins of bad mouth odor:

    * Food. The food we eat can affect our breath in two ways. First, some foods like onions or garlic have an odor which is transferred by the blood stream into our lungs and out in the air we exhale. Also, particles from any type of food we have eaten can emit a foul odor if they remain in the mouth long enough to collect bacteria.
* Tobacco use. Add bad breath to the long list of reasons to kick the habit! Both smoking and smokeless tobacco use can add to halitosis.
* Dry mouth (xerostomia). Adequate saliva flow helps cleanse the mouth of food particles, while enzymes in the saliva keep bacteria at bay. Dry mouth may be caused by certain prescription medications, as well as frequent mouth breathing.
* Inadequate or infrequent dental hygiene. This goes for at-home care, as well as regularly scheduled dental exams and cleanings!

Contact your friendly Columbus, OH Cosmetic Dental team, led by Dr. Sharon Schindler for more information on possible causes of halitosis!

If you are one of the many Americans who have experienced tooth loss due to decay or an accident, consider dental implants as a solution to this uncomfortable and unsightly problem. Here at the office of Dr. Sharon Schindler, we are proud to offer dental implants to restore the proper function of your bite, or give you the radiant appearance of a picture-perfect smile.

Dental implants are a state-of-the-art alternative to using a bridge in replacement of a single missing tooth, or a removable partial denture to remedy a span of missing teeth. An implant-supported single crown can fill out your smile without the need to drill on adjacent teeth. If you have lost multiple teeth in one area of the mouth, perhaps an implant-supported bridge is an option for you. Dental implants are a permanent, non-removable restoration, making them more convenient and natural-looking than partial dentures for multiple missing teeth. If you are a denture-wearer, you may be able to eliminate embarrassing slipping or loose dentures with the security of dental implants!

Dental implant placement is just one of the many services we are excited about offering to our patients who are seeking excellent care. Call our office today to schedule an appointment to determine if you are a candidate for dental implants, and get the process started!
